Checking in on the Hannibal Family's Battle with the Red River

We told you about how friends and members of the Hannibal family were working to build a levee around their home on the Red River at the very edge of Miller County. We went out today to see how their project was going.

They have their three foot levee in place, covered in plastic, and after some confusion with Miller County over sandbags, the family was able to get some empty sandbags from officials in Hempstead County across the river in Fulton, Arkansas. Everybody pitched in and filled the bags that the family is using.

Here on Saturday May 30, water is filling the oxbow that surrounds the home place. Maybe taking the pecan trees that Hannibal grafted and planted in 1994. Mark and family expect the road into the families place to be under water within the next couple of days. They will park all of their vehicles and equipment up on the other side of the Miller County levee and use boats to get back and forth but are determined to win this battle against "The Red". We will keep checking in with the family.

They are using sandbags to secure the plastic liner covering the loose dirt levee surrounding the farm house. Officials in Hempstead County have filled sand-bags on hand for residents to use, just come and get them.
